Patient Pre-Op Instructions

The patient will be receiving IV medications during their upcoming dental procedure. It is therefore very important that you adhere to the following instructions. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call for further instructions: 316-788-5939. It is essential for the patient’s safety that you strictly adhere to the following policies. Failure to do so, will result in cancellation of the operative procedure and can put the patient in danger of severe lung injury or death.
No food for 8 hours prior to your arrival time:
- No solid food of any kind: milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, juice, or broth.
- No candy, gum, mints, or vitamins.
- No products containing protein or milk products, even if they appear clear.
Clear liquids are allowed up to 3 hours prior to your arrival time. Approved liquids are:
- Water, Sprite/7-up/Sierra Mist or Gatorade of any color or flavor
- Gatorade cannot have any added protein or fats
- Plain Jello with NO added fruit, no vegetables, and no whipped cream
Nothing is to go in the patient’s mouth in the 3-hour window directly before his/her procedure.
- No gum, candy, mints, vitamins, or sips of water
- Do NOT have the patient brush their teeth on the morning of the appointment, they may swallow water or toothpaste and this will result in cancellation.
- If the patient has an inhaler or nebulizer, please bring his/her medication on the day of the procedure
- Have the patient dress in comfortable clothing, preferably a short sleeve shirt.
- After the patient’s dental procedure, wait until the next day before allowing him/her to engage in any activity which a decrease in alertness, judgement, or coordinator could cause a problem
Pediatric Specific Instructions
- Do NOT send your child to school, daycare, or babysitter on the day of the appointment. Children must be monitored by a parent or guardian at all times prior to appointment to verify adherence to above polices. Failure to do so, will result in cancellation of the appointment.
- Children require extra care during transportation home from their appointment. It is high recommended that two adults accompany the child so the driver do not have to the attend the patient in transit home.
- Younger children will occasionally become relaxed enough to lose bladder control. You may want to consider a diaper, pull up, or a change of clothes just as a precaution.
- Please bring appropriate guardianship paperwork, if necessary. If the child is in foster care, a copy of the Consent to Medical Care form and Placement Agreement will be required.
Adult Specific Instructions
- Please bring appropriate guardianship paperwork, if necessary.
- Please do not send the patient to Day Services or School, if applicable on the day of the procedure.
- Arrange for transportation from the dentist/surgeon’s office to your home after the procedure.
- After dental procedure, wait until the next day before engaging in any activity which a decrease in alertness, judgement, or coordinator could cause a problem including driving.
- After surgery, you may take pain medication as directed by the surgeon. However, avoid alcohol postoperatively for 24 hours.
- Arrange for adult assistance for at least 12 hours after surgery
